Ivory Tree Lodge - Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Accommodation in Pilanesberg Game Reserve and Surrounds

Star Rating:4

Ivory Tree Game Lodge is situated in the north eastern region of the Pilanesberg National Park, the closest point of entry is through Bakgatla Gate.

The Pilanesberg National Park is characterised by impressive volcanic mountain forms and rolling savannah grasslands. These spectacular features have created one of the most topographical diverse reserves in Southern Africa. Within the northern region of the park lies an ancient amphitheatre and it is in this basin, surrounded by rocky spires, that Ivory Tree Game Lodge has been crafted.

Small intimate guest areas have been created to retain warmth and seclusion for individual guests. In stark contrast the lodge can be transformed into an incentive paradise, the list of activities limited only by ones imagination.

The central guest areas include lounges, bar, a dining room and a feature rock pool. Sweeping patios provide the ideal venue for delicious English breakfasts and light luncheons with the boma reserved fireside dinners.

Striving to maintain a high level of personal attention, game drive vehicles are custom built ten-seater vehicles. Experienced rangers and hosts are committed to bringing you close encounters with a wide variety of big game during morning and afternoon / evening game drives.

The Safari Experience
Most of our guests are at Ivory Tree for the thrill of the open vehicle safari. Ivory Tree uses custom built 10 seater open game viewers which permit maximum all around visibility. The park is home to a wide variety of general game including the Big 5, in addition both species of rhino occur, namely black and white, and cheetah and wild dog. Each group of guests is assigned a personal guide who is tasked with interpreting the sights and sounds of the African bush. Your guide will spend time with you at dinners aswell and is always around to ensure that you remain comfortable during your stay with us.

Incentives by their very nature challenge us all to create an unforgettable experience, Ivory Tree is ideally positioned to create a magical and mystical guest experience. This is made possible through the lodges proximity to Johannesburg and the Sun City complex, the fact that the lodge features 60 double luxury suites ensures that most incenive groups can be accommodated. A few questions will need to be asked by us to assist us in better understanding your particular expectations, and to this end you are limited by your imagination. We have included some options below and will be only to happy to assist you in creating dreams.

Whilst most guests are at Ivory Tree for the thrill of the open vehicle safaris, there are also a number of other activities; The Amazing Race , without doubt the most popular of our offerings.

• Entertainment in either the open air boma or at our exclusive remote bush dinner site is also an option and could include a marimba band, drumming, traditional dancers etc.
• Spa Treatments are made possible through the partnership with Mangwanani, therapists convert one or more private lounge areas within the lodge environs into a haven of aromas and sensations. It is not unusual to have as many as 20 therapists at the lodge.

Ivory Tree has included a dedicated conference room among its facilities, please enquire into the availability of conference room equipment before concluding your conference planning. Alongside is a thumbnail of a proposed seating layout. This specific plan indicates a class room type layout and makes provision for 70 delegates. In our opinion, however, 80 delegates seated in this configuration would be the maximum possible. If the idea of another routine game lodge experience raises little more than a sigh, gets you running to the doctor for a sick note, meeting with the reserve bank for assistance with payment, and where some lazy lodge manager tells you what you can't do, then this is just the answer for you...

Tailor-made Conservation Conferences and Incentives.
During conferences and Incentives at our lodges we are frequently approached by groups enquiring about participation in conservation exercises. This idea prompted us to integrate conservation with the guest experience. In short we are now able to involve guests in the process of routine data gathering to determine condition and genetic mapping amongst other things. Conference requirements frequently conflict with the routine private game lodge programme, it has therefore become necessary for us to tailor make each experience to suit the requirements of a particular conference or incentive. This often results in game drives being amended or cancelled to permit adequate session time. For this reason we would welcome the opportunity of presenting a tailor-made itinerary where the client is not required to pay for activities not participated in. These programmes are available at both Ivory Tree and Kapama, and the range of camps and capacity will ensure that your next conference or incentive provides the best experience yet.

Ivory Tree Activities

The principle activity at Ivory Tree is the open vehicle safaris which give our guests a truly exciting and rare bushveld experience. There are also a numerous activities which occur in and around the Pilanesberg National Park, which include hot air ballooning, elephant back rides and golf at the nearby Sun City complex. Unlike most national park game drives, ours are conducted in custom built 10 seater vehicles. Our guests are allocated a dedicated ranger for the duration of their stay, ensuring that they enjoy a full game viewing opportunity, the emphasis being on big game. This enables your ranger to better understand your particular interests and permits enough time to do his/her best to ensure that Ivory Tree satisfies your requirements. Game drive times are determined by optimal animal activity periods and would be adjusted seasonally, for example, during the summer months the game drives would typically take place early in the morning (before breakfast) and late in the afternoon. During the winter months, game drives depart later in the morning (after breakfast) and earlier in the afternoon.

Quadbiking (NEW)
We have recently introduced a new and exciting activity at Ivory Tree, guests are taken on an escorted route which passes through a community brick making project before proceeding through the neighbouring village. From here the track rises into the rolling hills that surround the Pilanesberg before returning to the lodge by way of a service gate ensuring that resident guests are not disturbed.

Conservation Safaris
The concept of involving guests in conservation exercises has traditionally been beyond the reach of guests in our private reserves, and even more so in national parks. We are delighted that we have been able to reach agreements with our parks to involve guests in these extremely exciting ivory-tree-game-lodge. This has been made possible through financial contributions from the guests to off set some of the costs relating to these conservation exercises. In some cases conservation exercises have become possible expressly through these contributions, a situation which can only benefit our wildlife heritage.
An example of this would be the darting of a lion for specific interventions; The experience typically begins after a short drive to the briefing area, here guests receive a detailed brief on the programme of events and an explanation on the reason why the exercise is about to take place.
The process of enticing the predators to the bait involves securing a carcass to a tree or similar anchor and then playing a recording of a distressed animal calling, once the subjects are at the carcass, the vet will dart the individual. Generally about 5 to 10 minutes will pass whilst the individual succumbs to the effects of the sedative. The vehicles move in and create a lager around the individual with our guides keeping a watchful eye over other members of the pride, assuming there are any. In this case the lion is loaded onto the back of a vehicle by guests. The individual is removed from the site and taken a safe distance away to begin the procedures. Procedures could include; branding, placing or removing collars, inserting micro chips etc.
Throughout the experience maximum guest participation is encouraged.
