Langebaan

Langebaan is situated on the eastern shore of the Langebaan lagoon. This holiday resort, retirement and fishing village has grown phenomenally in the past four years owing to the arrival of the steel project in neighbouring Saldanha Bay. At Langebaan Nature Reserve, Geelbek offers sites of dunes (with 2 hving good look out points), fossils and bird life. There are some fossil trails. If you stop off at the information centre, they will assist you. There is a small entrance fee charged. Sport enthusiasts enjoy almost every kind of watersport known. Summers are never very hot nor winters very cold. Langebaan is an ideal place to visit all years round.
  • West Coast Fossil Park - Over the years a phosphate mine on this site has yielded a rich crop of fossils and when mining operations stopped in 1993, the mining company and SA Musuem saw the potential for developing this into a 14ha fossil park.
  • West Coast National Park - The parks 25ha stretches across the rather bleak strandveld from Langebaan area to the little seaside village of Yzerfontein in the south. About 50 000 migrant wading birds leave their bredding grounds on their long and often final journey to take up summer residence in and around the shallow waters of the lagoon. This park is also briefly but magically transformed by the wildflowers of springtime.
